Keynote Talk: The Cultural Impact of Hollywood and the Stories They Tell (8AM Friday, July 17)

Stories and storytellers are vital to society because stories break through mental barriers and simulate our ability to use imagination and language to create new worlds and possibilities. Storytelling is a uniquely human ability.  Stories bridge time, language and culture to create empathy, shared experience and authentic connections .

Always a movie-lover, Ms. Sherick has overseen digital marketing campaigns for some of the most successful films in Hollywood history, such as “Avatar” and “The X-Men” franchise.  She will discuss how stories told through film touch millions of people across the world and can have profound social impact.  Epic stories like Star Wars stories have the ability to uplift and inspire while movies like “Black Panther” can trigger serious and necessary discussions of race and privilege. Sherick argues that movies can help transform society by showcasing diverse voices and stories that reset the vision, values and agenda for those to come.  At its best, the film industry offers moviegoers a reflection of themselves today and inspires them to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
